Our ride will be departing from Hollydale Regional Park at 11:15 am southbound on the LA River Bikeway, and we will arrive at DeForest Park before we return to our starting point. The hike to the Bridge to Nowhere follows the East Fork of the San Gabriel River upstream until you reach the bridge. An eventual connection to the Whittier Greenway Trail will provide additional recreational and transportation options for residents of that city. From the the northern point we headed South and backtracked across the dam and down onto the trail. Overall a good place to ride. The SGRT goes ahead. Signage is sparse to absent. The new San Gabriel River Trail is a concrete trail that follows the San Gabriel River from San Gabriel Park to the Katy Crossing neighborhood. Though the trail travels through an urban environment, adjacent parks and natural features help diversify the landscape. The scenery is better than the lower trail. These plants have a tendency to absorb and concentrate selenium in their tissues from the soils in which they grow, and can be potentially very toxic if the roots or green parts of the plant are consumed. Plan to arrive early if you are borrowing a bike. Remember, coyotes are wild animals. It is native to western North America, in the Western United States and into Baja California, Mexico. Up the road 0.7 miles is Encanto Park. It kills prey by holding the victim in its bill and slamming it repeatedly against the ground.

Crotalus viridis (Common names: prairie rattlesnake, western rattlesnake, plains rattlesnake, and others) is a venomous pit viper species native to the western United States, southwestern Canada, and northern Mexico. Western rattlesnakes live on the land, but it can sometimes climb in trees or bushes. The trail crisscrosses over the San Gabriel River in several spots and passes by/through several parks along the way: a Frisbee golf course, a residential neighborhood, and a star gazing seating/viewing area. Pops in and off the San Gabriel river paved path. Nice touch. I recently learned about the San Gabriel River Trail, and I'm thinking of taking Amtrak to Union Station, metro to Azusa, and then riding it down to Seal Beach and riding back to Irvine. Turn right onto Old San Gabriel Canyon Road and park in the lot. In the south, the trail follows the channelized river past a mix of industrial and residential surroundings, while the northern portion opens up to scenic vistas of the surrounding mountains. Follow signs to stay on Rosemead Blvd for 2.4 miles. In the fall, the leaves turn to gold and yellow before falling from the trees.

Alnus rhombifolia, the white alder, is an alder tree native to western North America, from British Columbia and Washington east to western Montana, southeast to the Sierra Nevada, and south through the Peninsular Ranges and Colorado Desert oases in Southern California. Consider Wal Mart and the rest of the Long Beach Town Center mall to be a full service commercial trailhead with acres of parking, restrooms, water, food, and shopping of all sorts, including an In & Out Burger store. The Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area is an LA County Park and there is an entry fee: $10/vehicle. No joy. The branches terminate in bunches of white tubular flowers five mm diameter, with five petals and long stamens. Areas for River and Stream Fishing at San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. If you are in the area, would recommend. In 2014, we were successful, when President Obama designated the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. Tail hair is replaced only in the spring. Artemisia californica, also known as California sagebrush, of the Asteraceae family, is a shrub that grows in coastal sage scrub, coastal strand, chaparral, and dry foothill communities, from sea level to 800 m (2600 ft.). Durfee/Thompson elementray school locked the gate, but we will check in with them again. It has thick bark, deeply channeled or furrowed at maturity. Grocery store baits such as pieces of hot dog or corn kernels can even catch fish.

The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae. Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii) is a medium-sized hawk native to the North American continent and found from Southern Canada to Northern Mexico. I hadnt ridden this trail for 10-15 years; it has gotten cluttered with homeless camps, crowded with fast training groups crowding my lane, and aggravated with fast and slow ebikes and scooters- Ill not ride it again.0. In the San Gabriel Mountains above Azusa is the gorgeous 7.5-mile Devils Canyon Dam Truck Trail. According to a National Geographic TV program, the highest measured speed of a peregrine falcon is 389 km/h (242 mph).

Its a 15, 30, 62 mile ride (not race) and looks like a fun event. The Watershed Conservation Authority, a partner of the state's San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy. Over 82 acres of open space and unique recreational provide opportunities for all who visit the facilities along the San Gabriel River in Lakewood. The eyes are white. Salvia apiana (white sage, bee sage, or sacred sage) is an evergreen perennial shrub that is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, found mainly in the coastal sage scrub habitat of Southern California and Baja California, on the western edges of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.

On the far shore of the SGT is the golf course at El Dorado Regional Park. Came across a couple of homeless folks, but no problems.

The black-chinned hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) is a small hummingbird. The alignment along Dunlap Crossing Road will connect an existing publicly accessible bike path on the west side of the San Gabriel River to the San Gabriel River Mid trail. Mimulus is a diverse plant genus, the monkey-flowers and musk-flowers. 

(Jim Burns) Update: March 30, 2022 -- The official response is the West Fork will remain closed indefinitely. I really like that I can skip the cars and traffic. Its a half mile long. They are active hunters and will prey on mice, frogs, and other small animals. The main trunk can fork close to the ground, making it look like two trees that have grown together, then diverged. The trail is a popular bicycle route.

CAUTION: Black Mustard may be toxic to horses. Laurel sumac has adapted to fire return intervals of 50-100+ years in the chaparral areas where it grows, and after a fire burns its above ground parts, a large burl underground resprouts new stems and leaves.

Rhus integrifolia, also known as lemonade berry, or lemonadeberry, is a shrub to small tree.

CAUTION: Coyotes may be dangerous to pets (small dogs). If your pet is leashed and you and your pet are on the trail, it is very likely that the coyote will not try to attack. Coyotes generally are not interested in confronting people, even small children.
